How Much Does EV Charger Installation Cost in the UK? (2025 Price Guide)

Electric car range cost

Summary

You’re ready to enjoy the convenience of charging your electric car at home, but there's one crucial question on your mind: "how much is this going to cost?" Searching for an answer can be frustrating. You'll see prices for chargers alone, vague "from" prices for installation, and a lot of technical jargon. The truth is, the final cost is made up of two key parts: the charger itself and the complexity of the installation. This guide will break down every aspect of the cost, so you know exactly what to expect. We believe in total transparency, which means no hidden fees and no surprises.

Part 1: The Cost of the EV Charger Unit

The first part of the cost is the physical hardware you choose. At waEV-charge, we offer two market-leading 7.4kW smart chargers, designed to suit different needs and budgets:

  • waEV-charge EV1s (Untethered): £447. This is our sleek, socket-only charger. It's perfect for a minimalist look on your driveway, allowing you to use the charging cable that came with your car or a custom one you buy separately.
  • waEV-charge EV1i (Tethered): £487. This is our all-in-one convenience model. It comes with a 5-metre cable permanently attached, so it's always ready to plug and go.

Part 2: The Cost of the Professional Installation

This is the part of the cost that can vary the most. A professional installation by a qualified electrician is not just a recommendation; it's a legal requirement for safety. Any work on your home's fixed wiring must comply with UK building regulations.

  • Trusted Source: You can learn more about these requirements on the government's official page for Part P of the Building Regulations, which covers electrical safety in dwellings.

A 'standard installation' typically costs between £400 - £600 and can include the following all be it some variances dependant on the company you choose.

  • Mounting the charger unit to a suitable destination of your choice.
  • Up to 10 metres of cabling from the supply location to the charger location including the drilling through of one wall.
  • Connection to your existing consumer unit if suitable or the fitting of a new two way consumer unit specific for the EV charger, fitted with an SPD.
  • All necessary safety testing and certification

What Factors Can Increase the Installation Cost?

This is where some companies are less than clear. At waEV-charge, we always recommend sending over any information for review if falling outside of a standard installation so we can be definitive on costs, this sometimes may require a physical survey. If you just placed your order without checking before, we would review everything submitted in your remote survey have the conversation with you prior to any works taking place meaning if you the additional costs were not suitable, you would be able to get a full refund.

  • Longer Cable Run: If the distance from your fuse box to your charger location is more than 10 metres, there will be an extra charge for the additional cable and labour.
  • Complex Cable Route: If the cable needs to go through thick walls, under floors, or requires groundwork (like digging a trench to a detached garage), this will add to the labour time and cost. Most of the time it's best to always have this reviewed prior to placing your order so you can be as definitive on costs as possible.
  • Other potential costs? All properties are required to have their water & gas bonding in place before a charger can be fitted, in most cases this will have been in place since you moved in to the proeprty, however in some cases it may not be to which works would be required. The average cost for this is around £130 each if required but can vary. Additionally, some EV chargers do not have built-in PEN fault detection. This means your installer is legally required to install a separate copper earth rod, or an external unit which can provide PEN fault detection on it's own. This can easily add £75-£200 to your final bill. Crucially, all waEV-charge units have this protection built-in as standard, so you will never face this extra cost with us.

Our Solution: Simple, All-Inclusive Pricing

To eliminate confusion, we offer straightforward 'fully installed' packages. For a standard installation, the total price you pay is:

  • waEV-charge EV1s (Untethered) Fully Installed: £887
  • waEV-charge EV1i (Tethered) Fully Installed: £927

This price includes the charger unit, a professional standard installation, all safety certification, and VAT. Our quote process confirms the final price upfront, giving you complete peace of mind.

Can the cost be reduced further?

Yes. If you are a tenant or live in a flat (as an owner or renter), or if you have a limited company registered to the same address the charger is being installed you may be eligible for the OZEV EV chargepoint grant. (Additionally, other grants are available for those installing in workplaces)

  • Trusted Source: This grant provides £350 off the cost of the charger and installation. You can check your eligibility on the official GOV.UK grant page.
